Maple is characterized
by its smooth, even and fine grain pattern. Natural maple
has little color variation and is more uniform than most select
hardwoods. It is light and clean, but mineral streaks are
common in maple and appear darker when stained. |

Cherry is a smooth, even-grained
hardwood known for its warm, rich look. Cherry 'mellows' or
darkens with age. Exposure to bright or direct sunlight will
cause the wood to darken and redden significantly unlike oak.
Cherry will have some sapwood, mineral streaking, fine pin
holes and pitch pockets. |

Oak is known for its
predominant grain patterns that run from straight lines to
arched and pointed. Lightness and darkness variations are
noticeable in lighter finishes. Rustic
Oak has the same characteristics as oak, but has intense,
predominant grain patterns and color variations along with
knotholes and more radical graining.
Oak is one of the stronger hardwoods. |

Hickory is known for
its strength and dramatic grain patterns. Its color may range
from blonde to tobacco brown within a panel. The natural beauty
of this wood is enhanced by random worm holes and knots. |

Red Birch is a strong,
durable, closed-grained wood with a very even texture. This
species looks similar to cherry wood, but does not darken
dramatically as it is exposed to sunlight. Because red birch
is the select heartwood from yellow birch trees, some sapwood
of a lighter color may be blended in the mix of boards. |

 |
Alder is characterized
by its straight grain and even texture. Its appearance can
range from pale red to reddish brown with an indistinct boundary
between heartwood and softwood. Alder is a softer wood than
maple and cherry and can dent relatively easily, but offers
a stable surface for stain. |

Pecan is one of the stronger
hardwoods characterized by dramatic color variations ranging
from white sapwood to reddish-brown heartwood on the same
board. Pecan will mellow with age, making the color variation
less apparent. It may contact pin holes, knots, burls and
color streaks. Rustic Pecan
has the same characteristics as pecan, but has more dramatic
color variations, pin holes, knots, burls, color streaks and
more radical graining. |

Walnut has a wide range of color variability
from a contrasting cream colored sapwood to tan to medium
brown to chocolate brown heartwood. Usually you will find
walnut products made with mouse gray to to dark brown wood.
The grain is mostly straight and open, but some boards have
burled or curly grain.
